Through Generations I was inspired by how the women in my family have changed through generations. When my mother’s mom, Birdie Grey (her grandbabies called her Daber), was alive and in her younger years, having tea was a social event, almost like a dinner party. When my two brothers and I were younger, we lived in a different house, and my mama collected cute teapots; and when we moved she put them away. Now, as the youngest of Daber’s grandkids, I wanted to show how all of the generations blend together into one family. I used the pink celadon glaze to represent the modern, younger generations in my family. The physical tea set I created represents the older, more traditional generations in my family. The celadon glaze emphasizes the imperfections created in the throwing and trimming process. Those imperfections relate to my family, because there will always be imperfections in a family, that’s what make them different than every other family, and what should be celebrated. My favorite part of creating this set, which was in fact the more difficult part as well, was trying to convey all of the generations through my work. I plan to continue my IB art experience for the next two years of my high school career, by continuing my “through the generations” pieces.
